We mentor researchers through established fellowship programs in AI safety and biosecurity, and fund our own fellows through our request for proposals.

ERA AIxBio Research Fellowship

A fully funded, ten-week research fellowship in Cambridge, UK, on AI-related biological risk and biosecurity. Gary Abel mentored fellows in ERA’s Winter 2026 cohort.

ERA mentors, Winter 2026

Applications: Open; deadline 19 October 2026. Closing time and time zone not published.
Program: 18 January–26 March 2027; ten weeks, full-time.
Location: Cambridge, UK; primarily in person.
Support: Open to applicants worldwide aged 18+; prior formal research experience not required. £10,000 stipend plus travel and visa support.

MATS

A 12-week mentored research fellowship in AI alignment, transparency, and security, based in Berkeley and London. Gary Abel and Chris Ganje mentor the Fourth Eon Biosecurity stream.

Our MATS stream, Winter 2027

Applications: The Winter 2027 window (18 August–6 September 2026) is closed. Next round TBA.
Program: 19 January–10 April 2027; twelve weeks, normally full-time.
Location: Berkeley, California, or London, UK; exceptions depend on the mentor.
Support: Stream-specific prerequisites; stipend plus living and travel support.

SPAR

A part-time, remote research fellowship that pairs researchers with mentors on three-month projects in AI safety and biosecurity. Fourth Eon mentors projects on biological foundation models for DNA synthesis screening.

Applications: The organizer expects Spring 2027 applications to open around December 2026; deadline TBA. The Fall 2026 window is closed.
Program: About three months; part-time, with a project-dependent commitment.
Location: Remote, worldwide, subject to eligibility and meeting times.
Support: Students, career changers, and professionals; unpaid, with approved research expenses covered.

Fourth Eon Fellowship

Our own fellowship: we fund and host people to scope new biosecurity programs, with up to $75,000 for three months as a Program Architect or a two-person team. Researchers who already hold a fellowship or career transition grant are also welcome.

Request for proposals

Applications: Open; proposals are reviewed as received. Email a short PDF proposal to programs@fourtheon.bio.
Program: Three months of scoping and program development, as a Program Architect or a two-person team.
Support: Up to $75,000 per program, with flexibility for exceptional proposals.
